Episode Summary
Honey
Rumor says the drowned maid from Aaduo's residence was the garden-party poisoner and took her own life, and Xiaolan wonders whether she acted for Aaduo, who may soon lose her place to a younger consort. At Gyokuyo's tea with Riishu, Maomao sees Riishu refuse honey and her attendants sneer at her, confirming the bullying. Jinshi, doubting that a maid had reason to poison Riishu, sends Maomao to help at Aaduo's residence.
There she works under Fengming, the friendly head lady-in-waiting whose family keeps bees, and names her as a possible secret go-between, citing her bandaged wrist and the colored slips found in a scorched sleeve. Riishu tells Maomao that honey nearly killed her as a baby. In the court archives, Maomao learns that Aaduo bore the emperor a son who died in infancy, and that her own father delivered him.
- Riishu's mistreatment and honey aversion
Maomao sees through the polite tea with Gyokuyo, notices Riishu's honey aversion and attendant criticism, and Jinshi questions her about the suicide and possible motive.
- Work at Aaduo's residence
Maomao helps Fengming with cleaning and airing books, suspects a motive of devotion to Aaduo, and learns of the family bees and the bandaged-wrist and scorched-sleeve clues pointing to Fengming.
- Archive records and suspicion of her father
Maomao questions Riishu about her honey reaction and attendant isolation, then finds archive records on Aaduo's son and an infant death, which lead her to suspect her father.
Recent Timeline
- Rokushoukan sponsored visit (Episode 7)
Maomao secured Lihaku's sponsorship for a temporary leave from the rear palace by offering him an introduction to the Rokushoukan brothel. The proprietor accepted the arrangement, but the advance Maomao had paid, half of her palace wages so far, could not cover Pairin's fee, so the proprietor demanded that she send more good customers.
- Pleasure district poisoning attempt (Episode 8)
A courtesan and her customer collapsed after drinking. Maomao concluded it was not a lovers' suicide pact but an attempted killing by the courtesan, who had used tobacco-infused liquor layered by density and drunk through a straw. The courtesan apparently survived by drinking only a small amount of the poisoned layer.
- Senior official's salted wine death (Episode 9)
A senior official's death, first reported as excessive drinking, was traced to a large amount of salt in the wine rather than poison. Maomao found the salt in the broken jar and concluded the dissolved salt caused the death, since his diminished sense of taste hid the danger from him. A kitchen servant was also found drowned in the outer moat, judged suicide by the guards, though Maomao doubted the climb was possible with bound feet; the case was later closed as suicide after an apparent farewell note turned up. Separately, after a two-month search for a person with a burned arm, the result identified Fengming, head lady-in-waiting of Aaduo.
- Tea and honey exposing Riishu's bullying (Episode 10)
Gyokuyo hosted Riishu for tea, and honey-cooked citrus peel was served. Riishu's aversion to honey and an attendant's complaint about her pickiness showed the bullying was real, ending Maomao's hope that the report was mistaken. Later, Riishu explained she had been told as an infant that honey nearly killed her, and her attendants objected to outsiders speaking with her, isolating her from visitors.
- Court records on Aaduo's childbirth (Episode 10)
Searching court archives, Maomao found Aaduo bore the future emperor a son seventeen years earlier, around the time his younger brother was born. The records showed Aaduo and the emperor shared a wet nurse. An infant's death sixteen years earlier led Maomao to examine who attended that birth.

World Memo
- Proposed drinking age prohibition
A proposal is under discussion to prohibit drinking before the age of twenty.
- Craftsman wall projections on rear palace wall
The rear palace wall has projections apparently used by craftsmen, which would make an unaided climb possible in principle.
Clue Board
- Jinshi may have tested Maomao with drugged food (Episode 2)
Maomao suspected that Jinshi had knowingly tried to make her eat the drugged bun, a question left unresolved in this episode.
- Soldiers' collapse after a village meal (Episode 2)
Soldiers sent against a foreign tribe collapsed amid cries of poison after eating a meal made in a nearby village. The headman was seized for siding with the tribe, but an officer calmed the scene and his punishment was put on hold. Since the soldiers ate outdoors with utensils they had prepared themselves, Maomao suggested poisonous plants, even fresh wood that turns toxic when burned, rather than the villagers; the cause has not been confirmed.
- Maomao's reading of Fuyo's sleepwalking (Episode 3)
At first Maomao wondered whether distress over being given away had caused Fuyo's sleepwalking. Later she told Gyokuyo her conclusion: like a courtesan she once knew, Fuyo faked it so the emperor would not be tempted to keep her before she was handed to the officer. Maomao stressed it was only conjecture, and Fuyo never confirmed it.
- Culprit of the poisoned soup (Episode 7)
Who poisoned the soup at the garden party is still unknown, and Jinshi believes it was an insider. Rumor now blames the drowned maid from Aaduo's residence, but Jinshi doubts a maid had any reason to poison Riishu and sends Maomao to Aaduo's residence.
- Possible swap of Gyokuyo's and Riishu's meals (Episode 7)
A dish normally made with oily fish contained jellyfish, suggesting the meals of Gyokuyo and Riishu were exchanged; Riishu confirmed she cannot eat mackerel, and whether Riishu was the intended target depends on whether other dishes also contained poison.
Maomao conjectures that Riishu's food taster switched the dishes on purpose to bully Riishu, not knowing the soup was poisoned, and that this spiteful swap ended up saving Riishu's life.
- Riishu's outfit as deliberate embarrassment (Episode 7)
Maomao conjectures that Riishu's attendants deliberately let her wear a bright pink outfit too similar to Gyokuyo's to embarrass her. A flashback of criticism over the clothing, which Maomao reads as Aaduo's attendants rebuking Riishu's attendants, supports the suspicion; it remains unconfirmed.
- Attendant's possible foreknowledge (Episode 8)
Maomao suspects the young attendant sought an absent apothecary to delay help and may have known the courtesan would survive, though she questions whether she is overthinking it.
- Courtesan as the attempted killer (Episode 8)
Maomao reasons that the courtesan used tobacco-infused liquor, with two liquors of different densities layered so she drank only the safe lower layer through a straw, then drank a small amount of the poisoned upper layer herself, calculating that the man would die while she survived; Maomao's treatment saved them both. This remains her hypothesis, not a confirmed answer.
- Unknown salter of the drink (Episode 9)
Maomao did not name who added the salt. She suggested that someone may have changed the sweet wine to suit their taste or repeatedly salted the drink as a malicious prank, and privately admitted she had effectively pointed toward a culprit.
- Drowned servant's uncertain death (Episode 9)
A kitchen servant was found drowned in the outer moat and the guards believed she jumped from the wall. Maomao could not determine suicide, doubted she could climb the high wall alone, and believed she entered the water alive. The case was later closed as suicide after a farewell note was found, though she had been present at the garden party poisoning incident.
- Honey linked to poisoning (Episode 10)
Maomao connects the residence's plentiful honey, Fengming's family bee-keeping, and Riishu's honey reaction to the idea of poisonous nectar as a possible means of poisoning; this remains a suspicion.
- Reason for Riishu's visit (Episode 10)
Riishu came to the residence with only her food taster, and Maomao wonders why she came; the purpose is not yet explained.
