Episode Summary

The New Pure Consort

Maomao, reluctantly assigned by Jinshi to teach the high consorts on the recommendation of Gyokuyo and Rifa, holds a secret lesson that includes Roran, the new Pure Consort who replaced Aaduo. Afterward an explosion sounds, and Maomao investigates with Lihaku, tracing it to flour dust ignited by suspected secret smoking inside a storehouse.

  • Assigned lesson for the consorts

With a new Pure Consort, Roran, installed in Aaduo's place, Jinshi asks Maomao to teach the high consorts, and recommendations from Gyokuyo and Rifa plus a promised reward make refusal difficult. Maomao keeps the attendance restricted and bars Jinshi from the lesson.

  • Lesson and reactions

Maomao introduces herself, asks for secrecy, and distributes her materials. Gyokuyo welcomes the break from routine while Riishu insists she cannot do what is discussed.

  • Storehouse explosion investigation

After an unexplained explosion, Maomao links the soot and fragments to an explosion rather than a small fire, tests flour dust with a flame, and suspects someone smoked inside the storehouse, then asks Lihaku to warn the keeper.

Recent Timeline

  • Fengming's surrender and Aaduo's departure (Episode 11)

Fengming surrendered to Jinshi, claiming she had acted to preserve Aaduo's rank, and was executed afterward, which closed the matter of the poisoned soup for Riishu. Aaduo left for a southern detached palace on the scheduled timetable, not because of the poisoning, and returned her consort's crown for a later consort to receive.

  • Aftermath of Fengming's execution and dismissals (Episode 12)

Fengming's relatives lost their property and received corporal punishment, while Aaduo escaped punishment since Fengming alone was held responsible. Maomao was dismissed from the rear palace in the mass dismissal, as the people who bought her were tied to Fengming's family business; Jinshi granted her generous compensation, and she returned to the pleasure district the following week.

At a banquet hosted by a high court official introduced through Lihaku, Maomao recognized Jinshi's voice. He offered to buy out her debt, and she said she might return to rear-palace service, insisting she had tried to express her wish to stay, and agreed only to fingertip contact.

  • Reassignment to Jinshi's residence and outer court dispute (Episode 13)

Maomao learned that her new workplace was Jinshi's residence rather than the rear palace, and was housed there, where Suiren explained the division between the office wing and Jinshi's private quarters. Several female officials in the outer court challenged why she served Jinshi directly; after her blunt remark that they were jealous worsened the dispute, she disparaged her own looks, then claimed Jinshi had employed her out of compassion, and they left.

  • Failed examination and assignment as maid (Episode 13)

When the examination for female officials arrived, Maomao failed it. She was instead assigned as a maid to Jinshi's rooms, ending her plan to serve as an official.

  • Storehouse explosion investigation (Episode 14)

After a night explosion, Maomao traced the blast to a food storehouse by reading soot and a charred potato, then demonstrated with flour that the powder ignited when dispersed. She concluded that someone smoking secretly inside had stirred the flour and set off the blast, and had Lihaku warn the warehouse keeper against smoking there.

Maomao

Apothecary raised in the pleasure district who once served Gyokuyo as food taster and lady-in-waiting and now works as the maid of Jinshi's rooms in the outer court. World Memo

  • Flour dust ignition hazard

Flour and similar powders can ignite when dispersed in the air, so stored powder in a closed space poses an explosion risk when disturbed near a flame.

Clue Board

  • Jinshi may have tested Maomao with drugged food (Episode 2)

Maomao suspected that Jinshi had knowingly tried to make her eat the drugged bun, a question left unresolved in this episode.

  • Maomao's reading of Fuyo's sleepwalking (Episode 3)

At first Maomao wondered whether distress over being given away had caused Fuyo's sleepwalking. Later she told Gyokuyo her conclusion: like a courtesan she once knew, Fuyo faked it so the emperor would not be tempted to keep her before she was handed to the officer. Maomao stressed it was only conjecture, and Fuyo never confirmed it.

  • Swap of Gyokuyo's and Riishu's meals (Episode 7)

A dish normally made with oily fish contained jellyfish, showing that Gyokuyo's and Riishu's meals had been exchanged. Riishu's food taster had switched them on purpose to bully Riishu, unaware of the poison, and Fengming has now confessed that the poison was meant for Riishu.

  • Tobacco leaves as poison (Episode 8)

Maomao identified tobacco leaves as the likely poison, but no leaves were mixed in the vomit; prompted by Ruomen's question about poison dissolved in liquid from the start, she concluded that the poison had been tobacco steeped in liquor.

  • Attendant's possible foreknowledge (Episode 8)

Maomao suspects the young attendant sought an absent apothecary to delay help and may have known the courtesan would survive, though she questions whether she is overthinking it.

  • Unknown salter of the drink (Episode 9)

Maomao did not name who added the salt. She suggested that someone may have changed the sweet wine to suit their taste or repeatedly salted the drink as a malicious prank, and privately admitted she had effectively pointed toward a culprit.

  • Reason for Riishu's visit (Episode 10)

Riishu came to the residence with only her food taster, and Maomao wonders why she came; the purpose is not yet explained.

  • Burned garment and wooden tablet (Episode 10)

A worker burned palace refuse and found a woman's garment with a scorched sleeve and a wooden tablet, then threw them into the fire; his hand trouble and the flames were taken as a curse, and Maomao suspects something on the tablet irritated his skin and may carry a secret message.

Maomao names Fengming as a possible outside communicator, citing the bandage on her left wrist and the colored wooden slips wrapped in a scorched garment; she suspects differently colored flames may be a code, while noting Fengming's gentle manner proves nothing.

  • Rumored courtesan buyout (Episode 13)

A rumor circulated that the rear palace administrator had bought out a courtesan from the Verdigris House; its truth remains unconfirmed.

  • Hair-sewn underwear (Episode 13)

Suiren found unfamiliar underwear sewn with human hair in the private rooms, an unexplained find that compounds the difficulty of keeping attendants.

  • Lakan denies noticing anything (Episode 14)

Rikuson asked Lakan whether something had caught his attention, and Lakan denied that anything had, though the explosion had just sounded. His denial is left unexplained.

  • Unknown person smoking in storehouse (Episode 14)

Maomao suspects someone entered the storehouse to smoke in secret, but who that person was is not identified. Lihaku was asked to warn the warehouse keeper against smoking inside.

Deduction Board

Facts

  • Forbidden area identified as military

Maomao was struck and warned she had entered a place forbidden to her; she identified the area as belonging to the military from the sandalwood and distinctive bitter smell.

  • Warehouse keeper injured

Lihaku reported that only the warehouse keeper was hurt in the small fire of unknown origin, and his life was not in danger.

  • Flour dust experiment

Maomao demonstrated that flour dispersed in the air can ignite, and the demonstration alarmed Lihaku.

Evidence

  • Night noise

An explosion sounded the night before, which Maomao linked to the incident.

  • Soot and scattered fragments

Maomao examined the soot and scattered fragments and judged the event an explosion rather than a small fire.

  • Charred potato and ivory pipe

A charred potato identified the building as a food storehouse, and an ivory object resembling a smoking pipe was found there.

Inferences

  • Possible dealings with Fengming's beekeeping family

Maomao suspected her registered family might have dealings with Fengming's beekeeping family.

  • Secret smoking caused explosion

Maomao proposed that someone smoked secretly inside the storehouse, stirring flour that ignited when the pipe was lit.

  • Possible arson

Maomao suspected arson could explain Lihaku's involvement, since the incident occurred within the palace grounds.

Suspicions

  • Possible murder

Maomao would not conclude the death was murder, leaving open whether it was suicide or murder.

  • Link to garden party poisoning

The drowned servant had been present during the garden party poisoning incident, and a farewell note led the case to be closed as suicide.

  • Aaduo's position as motive

Maomao reasoned that removing Riishu could protect Aaduo's position before a new consort arrived, since the emperor did not visit Riishu.
