Episode Summary

Chilly Apothecary

Soldiers fall ill after a meal made in a nearby village whose headman was detained for supporting an opposing ethnic group; when Jinshi describes the case, Maomao suggests poisonous plants or burning fresh wood rather than the food itself. Maomao joins the Jade Pavilion as Gyokuyo's food taster, identifies an aphrodisiac in a bun by smell, and suspects Jinshi knowingly had her taste it.

Jinshi then asks her to compound an aphrodisiac, which she makes from cacao, milk, butter, sugar, and honey; its potency shows when other ladies-in-waiting eat the snack she made from the leftovers, and she hands the real batch to him.

  • Food taster duties

Maomao is assigned to taste food for poison at the Jade Pavilion, where she learns that an earlier taster was crippled by poisoning attempts during Gyokuyo's pregnancy. Her arrangements with Hongniang over wages and her boredom under restricted duties also come up.

  • Poisoning investigation

Jinshi shares the soldiers' symptoms and the detained village headman's case, and Maomao suggests the cause may lie in the outdoor cooking or in poisonous plants rather than in the food itself. An officer's restraint is seen as having saved the village from destruction.

  • Aphrodisiac preparation

Jinshi asks Maomao to make an aphrodisiac, and she gathers ingredients and prepares it with delight. She warns of its strength and of private use, and Jinshi thanks her for the effort.

Recent Timeline

  • Death of the emperor's son (Episode 1)

Less than a month after Maomao left her warning, word reached her that the emperor's son born to Rifa had died. The loss followed the rumored deaths of the other imperial children, deepening the sense that the palace's crisis was far from over.

  • Maomao appointed lady-in-waiting (Episode 1)

After Maomao exposed the poisoned face powder, Gyokuyo appointed her as a lady-in-waiting. It was a promotion Maomao had never sought, coming after her attempt to help anonymously had failed to keep her out of view.

  • Soldiers' poisoning at village meal (Episode 2)

Soldiers collapsed after eating a meal supplied by a village whose headman was detained on suspicion of supporting an opposing ethnic group. An officer postponed the headman's punishment. Maomao's explanation of poisonous plants suggested the poisoning may have come from the soldiers' own utensils or cooking rather than the village food.

In the same stretch, Maomao recommended silver dishes to detect poison, and Hongniang revealed that the earlier pottery had been deliberately used to test her at Jinshi's suggestion. Maomao also agreed to deductions from the money sent home to her abductors, and Hongniang awarded her hazard pay nearly equal to her salary, which pleased Maomao because the abductors would receive less.

  • Drugged bun and aphrodisiac for Jinshi (Episode 2)

Jinshi received a bun from a military officer, and Maomao identified an aphrodisiac in it by smell, suspecting Jinshi had knowingly tried to have her eat the drugged food. Later, Jinshi asked Maomao to make an aphrodisiac, and she compounded it from cacao, milk, butter, sugar, and honey.

She warned that the preparation was strong and should be used only in private. Jinshi thanked her for it.

Clue Board

  • Illness of the imperial children (Episode 1)

Rumors said three imperial children had died after gradually weakening, and now the babies of Rifa and Gyokuyo showed the same symptoms. Maomao saw that it was no curse: the cause was the poisonous white face powder.

  • Rhododendron warning note (Episode 1)

On the day Gyokuyo went to the Crystal Pavilion to ask for her daughter to be examined, a warning tied to a rhododendron branch was left by her window: the white face powder is poison, keep it from the baby. Gyokuyo asked Jinshi to find the writer, and he traced it to Maomao through the laundry servants' cloth and her ability to read.

  • Face powder as poison source (Episode 1)

Maomao recognized the face powder as the cause because courtesans in the pleasure district where she grew up had been poisoned by expensive powder. Gyokuyo said Lingli's wet nurse favored it for its whitening effect and had been sent away with pay after falling ill herself; no one had used it as a poison on purpose, and the harm came from not knowing it was toxic.

  • Jinshi may have tested Maomao with drugged food (Episode 2)

Maomao suspected that Jinshi had knowingly tried to make her eat the drugged bun, a question left unresolved in this episode.

  • Soldiers' collapse after a village meal (Episode 2)

Soldiers sent against a foreign tribe collapsed amid cries of poison after eating a meal made in a nearby village. The headman was seized for siding with the tribe, but an officer calmed the scene and his punishment was put on hold. Since the soldiers ate outdoors with utensils they had prepared themselves, Maomao suggested poisonous plants, even fresh wood that turns toxic when burned, rather than the villagers; the cause has not been confirmed.

Suspicions

  • Maomao as warning author

Jinshi suspected Maomao wrote the warning: he remembered her muttering about needing something to write with on the day of the quarrel, linked the cloth to the laundry servants' work clothes, and used a written note only a literate servant could read to single her out. Maomao finally admitted it.

  • Jinshi knowingly used drugged food

Maomao suspected Jinshi had knowingly tried to make her eat the drugged food

  • Deliberate poisoning of soldiers

Cries of poisoning first raised the alarm, but deliberate poisoning of the soldiers is not confirmed
