Episode Summary

The Threat

At the emperor's request, Maomao is sent to tend Rifa's worsening condition at the Crystal Pavilion. Rifa's attendants reject her simple food and treatment until Jinshi reminds them that refusing her defies the emperor's wishes; Maomao then stops the attendant still applying the poisonous face powder and feeds Rifa thin rice gruel before gradually adding richer food.

Over about two months Rifa regains the strength to walk. Before leaving, Maomao advises on diet and precautions, tells Rifa the emperor may yet come back to her, and passes on a technique.

  • Clash with the attendants

Rifa's attendants reject Maomao's simple food and block her from examining Rifa, until Jinshi reminds them that refusing her means defying the emperor's wishes.

  • Poison removal and careful feeding

Maomao punishes an attendant who kept applying poisonous cosmetics, cleans the contaminated floor and room, and feeds Rifa thin rice gruel slowly while steadily adding richer foods.

  • Recovery and parting words

About two months later Rifa can walk on her own, and Maomao leaves instructions on diet and precautions, answers Rifa's doubts about bearing children again and the emperor's affection, and passes on a technique before returning to Gyokuyo.

Recent Timeline

  • Emperor's son dies and Maomao is promoted (Episode 1)

Less than a month after Maomao left her warning, news came that the emperor's son born to Rifa had died, following the rumored deaths of the other imperial children. After Maomao exposed the poisoned face powder, Gyokuyo appointed her lady-in-waiting, a promotion she had never sought.

  • Village poisoning, pottery test, and drugged bun (Episode 2)

Soldiers collapsed after eating a meal supplied by a village whose headman was detained on suspicion of supporting an opposing ethnic group, and an officer postponed his punishment. Maomao's account of poisonous plants suggested the cause lay in the soldiers' own utensils or cooking rather than the village food.

Hongniang revealed that the earlier pottery test of Maomao had been deliberately arranged at Jinshi's suggestion. Maomao also agreed to deductions from the money sent to her abductors and received hazard pay nearly equal to her salary, pleased that they would receive less. Jinshi received a drugged bun from an officer, which Maomao identified by smell and suspected Jinshi had knowingly meant her to eat it. Jinshi later asked her to prepare an aphrodisiac, which she compounded with a strong warning to use it only in private.

  • Fuyo transferred to the officer (Episode 3)

Fuyo was forbidden to leave and kept under eunuch supervision until her transfer. She departed on the day she was handed over to the military officer.

  • Attendant punished for poisoned cosmetics (Episode 4)

An attendant who kept applying the poisonous face powder to Rifa to preserve her beauty was condemned by Maomao for using the same poison that had killed Rifa's child. After confinement she was allowed to serve Rifa again and promised not to repeat the mistake.

  • Rifa's recovery from poisoning (Episode 4)

After attendants obstructed treatment, Maomao took over Rifa's care, feeding her thin rice gruel and tea to flush out the lingering poison and gradually adding richer foods. About two months later Rifa could walk on her own again, and her willingness to eat showed she did not want to die despite the loss of her child.

Clue Board

  • Ghost sightings began in the north (Episode 3)

Xiaolan recalled that the ghost was first seen on the north side before it began appearing on the eastern wall. Since Fuyo's quarters are in the north building, this helped Maomao identify the ghost as Fuyo.

  • Maomao's reading of Fuyo's sleepwalking (Episode 3)

At first Maomao wondered whether distress over being given away had caused Fuyo's sleepwalking. Later she told Gyokuyo her conclusion: like a courtesan she once knew, Fuyo faked it so the emperor would not be tempted to keep her before she was handed to the officer. Maomao stressed it was only conjecture, and Fuyo never confirmed it.

  • Fuyo's dancing and her ordinary manner (Episode 3)

Fuyo's plain everyday manner is strikingly different from how she looked while dancing on the wall. Maomao conjectures that Fuyo deliberately botched her dance before the emperor, and that her nightly dance on the eastern wall was a prayer for the military officer's safe return; Fuyo never confirmed this.

Deduction Board

Facts

  • Childhood companion of the officer

Fuyo and the military officer were childhood companions; he specifically requested her as his reward after distinguishing himself in a military campaign.

  • Face powder poisoning of Rifa

The banned poisonous face powder was used on Rifa, and the same poison had killed her child

  • Attendant still applying cosmetics

One attendant admitted she was still applying cosmetics to keep Rifa beautiful, using the poison

Evidence

  • Recovery on gruel and tea

Rifa was fed thin rice gruel and tea, then rice, soup, and grated fruit were added as she ate better

  • Rifa's will to eat

Rifa still wanted to eat, showing she did not want to die

  • Walking after two months

About two months later Rifa could walk on her own

Inferences

  • Plant-based cause possible

Maomao offered an alternative explanation: poisonous plants, including wood that poisons when burned, could have caused the illness without deliberate poisoning

  • Feigned sleepwalking as safeguard

Maomao's explanation suggests the feigned sleepwalking provided an additional safeguard, since the emperor might still have wanted Fuyo before she became another man's wife.

  • Poison believed to remain

Maomao believed the poison remained in Rifa's body, so she gave tea to promote urination

Suspicions

  • Dance as prayer for officer

Maomao conjectured that Fuyo's dancing at the eastern gate was a prayer for the officer's safe return, since the campaign took place in the east.

  • Sleepwalking from transfer distress

Maomao first wondered whether distress over the impending transfer caused the sleepwalking and wanted more information, but she later concluded that Fuyo had feigned it.

  • Loss of child drained will

Maomao suspected that losing her child had drained Rifa's will to live
