Episode Summary

Episode 4

Iris receives her first personal commission from her home village of Kazari, and Violet goes along to type for her after Iris hurts her hand. The request turns out to be a ruse by Iris's mother, who wants her home for a birthday party that doubles as matchmaking, and the arrival of Eamonn, the childhood friend who rejected Iris's confession, sends her running to her room.

Learning how much courage "I love you" takes, Violet helps Iris write apologies to the guests and a heartfelt letter to her parents. On the way home, Iris's story of her name brings back Violet's memory of Gilbert naming her.

  • Return to Kazari

Iris, accompanied by Violet to handle the typing, returns to her home village on her first personal commission, and her family welcomes her home while she exaggerates her workload.

  • Reconciliation and letters

Iris recalls her childhood friend's rejection and her resolve to become a letter writer, understands Violet better, and dictates apology letters to the guests and a letter of apology and thanks to her parents, which Violet types.

  • Origin of her name

On the way back, Iris says she was named after the iris flower because she was born when it was in full bloom, and Violet remembers Gilbert giving her the name Violet and telling her to become a person worthy of it rather than a tool.

Recent Timeline

  • Discharge and move to company (Episode 1)

After Violet's discharge from the hospital was approved, Hodgins, who had left the military, collected her, brought her to Leiden and the Evergarden household, and then took her to his company, where she began working as a postal carrier under Benedict.

Soon after, a client who could not write asked Violet to send a letter to a childhood friend after hearing she might marry another man. Cattleya turned the client's feelings into a love letter, and the client approved it.

  • Apprenticeship and staff retention (Episode 2)

Violet volunteered to become an Auto-Memories Doll apprentice to learn the meaning of Gilbert's words, and Cattleya showed her around and introduced the other dolls, Iris and Erica.

She then wrote a letter for a female client for the first time, failed to grasp the emotions involved, and the letter angered both the recipient and the client. Hodgins decided not to fire her, gave her a new uniform, and returned the brooch Gilbert had given her, which he recovered at the cost of a month's salary. Violet agreed to attend a Doll training course.

  • Graduation selection and Spencer's letter (Episode 3)

Rhodanthe had warned that only students she judged capable would receive proof of graduation. Nine students, including Luculia, were announced as graduates while Violet was not, leaving her doubting whether she could become a good Doll.

Violet had written a brief letter on Luculia's behalf, expressing happiness and gratitude that Luculia's older brother Spencer was alive, and delivered it to him herself; Spencer wept as he read it. When Luculia showed the letter to Rhodanthe, Rhodanthe recognized it as Violet's first step toward becoming a good Doll and allowed Violet to graduate as well.

  • False commission and birthday clash (Episode 4)

Iris's mother sent a request naming Iris, signed with the name of her late great-grandmother, simply to bring her home. Violet, who came along to type for Iris, refused the false commission but accepted a new request under the correct name to write invitations for Iris's birthday party two days later.

At the party, the arrival of a man Iris had wanted excluded, since he had rejected her romantic feelings, upset her. Iris blamed Violet for inviting him. The quarrel ended with Iris admitting her humiliation and Violet acknowledging her limits in reading unspoken emotions.

  • Apology letters to guests and parents (Episode 4)

Iris asked Violet to write heartfelt apologies to the party guests, including the man who had rejected her, and a letter to her parents.

In the parents' letter, Iris apologized for spoiling the party, thanked them for requesting her, which was her first personal commission, and asked for their continued support. Her mother thanked her for the letter.

On the way back, Iris explained that she was named after the iris flower, and Violet remembered Gilbert giving her the name Violet and telling her to become a person worthy of it rather than a tool.
