Episode Summary

Sabito and Makomo

Tanjiro begins Demon Slayer training under Sakonji on Mount Sagiri, learning demon lore, sword mechanics, and breathing techniques through repeated traps and falls, while Nezuko sleeps for months without waking. After a year, Sakonji sets him the task of slicing a boulder before he can enter the Final Selection. Tanjiro trains alone for six months, meets the masked swordsman Sabito and the girl Makomo, and finally cuts the boulder in half during a final match.

  Tanjiro repeatedly descends the mountain through traps, learns sword mechanics and the breathing forms, and is even kicked off a cliff into a river, while Nezuko sleeps for months without waking.

• Family massacre discovered (Episode 1)

  Returning from Saburo's home at dawn, Tanjiro finds his mother and family dead and Nezuko bloodied in the front yard, with Rokuta in her arms. Nezuko is the only one still warm, and he carries her toward town for help before she turns into a demon and attacks him.

• Nezuko spared by Demon Slayer (Episode 1)

  Giyu Tomioka attacks the transformed Nezuko but, seeing her protect Tanjiro while wounded and resisting hunger, decides to spare her and knocks her unconscious. He then tells Tanjiro to seek Sakonji Urokodaki at the foot of Mount Sagiri.

• Temple demon killed at dawn (Episode 2)

  Tanjiro and Nezuko fought a demon eating corpses in a forest temple. Nezuko kicked its head off and Tanjiro threw its body off a cliff, but when Sakonji, appearing behind him, told him to finish the head with a rock, Tanjiro froze; the demon burned to ash when the sun rose.

• Sakonji's mountain test (Episode 2)

  Sakonji tested Tanjiro by having him carry Nezuko on a run and then descend the trap-filled mountain before dawn. Tanjiro reached Sakonji's doorstep battered at sunrise, and Sakonji accepted him as his student, prompted by Giyu's letter.

• Boulder slicing trial (Episode 3)

  After a year of training, Sakonji sets the condition that Tanjiro may enter Final Selection only if he slices a huge boulder. After six months of failed attempts, Sabito appears, defeats Tanjiro, and later in a final match Tanjiro's swing ends the fight, slicing the boulder in half instead of Sabito's mask, marking the completion of Tanjiro's trial.
