Recent Timeline

  • Final Selection trials and Hand Demon defeat (Episode 4)

On the first day of Final Selection, Tanjiro finds the Opening Thread and kills two demons arguing over who would eat him, using Water Breathing, Fourth Form: Striking Tide in one slash. Later, after surviving the Hand Demon, he learns it had devoured thirteen of Sakonji's students, including Sabito and Makomo, and had been imprisoned on Mount Fujikasane forty-seven years earlier. Tanjiro beheads it with First Form: Water Surface Slash, ending the threat in the forest.

  • Hand Demon's end and Corps induction (Episode 5)

As the beheaded Hand Demon crumbles, the souls of Sakonji's students are freed to pass into the afterlife. Four survivors of the seven-day trial are given uniforms and the lowest Corps rank, Mizunoto, each receiving a Kasugai Crow, though the blond boy gets a sparrow. Tanjiro then returns to Sakonji's hut, where Nezuko wakes and embraces him, and Sakonji hypothesizes her long sleep is an alternative to devouring humans for recovery. Haganezuka later delivers Tanjiro's Color Changing Nichirin Sword, which turns black when unsheathed, surprising both smith and mentor and leaving the color unexplained.

  • Satoko devoured by clone (Episode 6)

The one-horned clone displays a collection of hairpins from its past victims. Kazumi recognizes Satoko's hairpin and realizes she was devoured, confirming the missing girls are dead.

  • Swamp clones defeated and hairpin returned (Episode 7)

Tanjiro enters the swamp portal and beheads two clones with Water Breathing, Sixth Form: Whirlpool. He cuts off the arms of the last clone, which had nearly killed Nezuko, and beheads it after it regrows its arms, ending the threat. He then offers Kazumi Satoko's hairpin, and Kazumi realizes Tanjiro endured a similar loss, apologizes for his harsh words, and is entrusted with the surviving girl before Tanjiro leaves at dawn.

  • Muzan sighted in Asakusa (Episode 7)

Right after finishing his first mission, Tanjiro is sent by his Kasugai Crow to the Asakusa district of Tokyo, to his shock at having to travel again so soon. On a busy street he tracks a demon's scent to Muzan, disguised as a human man with a wife and child. Muzan secretly slashes a passerby's neck, turning him into a demon who bites his own wife's shoulder, terrifying the crowd while Muzan silently watches.

World Memo

  • Demons devour humans

Demons devour humans and are nocturnal, so crossing the mountain at night is perilous and demons roam about at night.

  • Demons can enter houses

Demons can enter human houses, which is why Demon Slayers are present to protect people.

  • Sunlight harms transformed demon

A transformed demon must not be exposed to sunlight.

  • Demon physical prowess

Demons have great physical strength and powerful regeneration.

  • Only sunlight or special sword

Demons can be killed only by sunlight or by a special sword.

  • Varied demon powers

Some demons can shape-shift, while others have entirely different powers.

  • Demon Slayers protect people

Demon Slayers exist to protect people, and their job is to kill demons. Humans fight demons despite slower regeneration and higher mortality, continuing to protect others.

  • Final Selection requirement

Becoming a Demon Slayer requires attending the Final Selection held on Mount Fujikasane. The trainer alone decides whether a student may enter.

  • Demon power scales with victims eaten

Demons eat humans to gain strength, as humans eat food; a demon's power is proportional to the number of victims it has devoured. Sakonji tells Tanjiro that once his sense of smell sharpens, he will be able to tell that number.

  • Blood Demon Art spells

Some kinds of demons possess spells called Blood Demon Art, which grant them supernatural abilities.

  • Demon Slayer uniform fibre

The Demon Slayer uniform is made of a special fibre that is waterproof, flame retardant, and strong enough to repel the claws and teeth of a weak demon.

  • Transformation by demon blood

A human whose wounds are exposed to a demon's blood turns into a demon; Giyu claims this cannot be undone, though demons might know a way. Only one demon's blood can turn a human into a demon: the progenitor Muzan Kibutsuji, who became the first demon over a thousand years ago.

Clue Board

  • Second scent at the house (Episode 1)

Tanjiro recalls that another scent was present at the house during the murders and suspects it belongs to the true culprit, not Nezuko.

  • Nezuko's restraint (Episode 1)

Nezuko spends energy healing her wounds and fighting while resisting the urge to kill Tanjiro for food, and Giyu notices she is different from other demons.

  • Identity of the watching children (Episode 5)

Makomo had said other children like her and Sabito were always watching Tanjiro. Sakonji calls the two 'those dead children', and the Hand Demon boasts of killing thirteen of his students: they were his students who died in Final Selection, and their souls depart once the Hand Demon dies.

  • Hand Demon imprisoned 47 years (Episode 5)

The Hand Demon says Sakonji imprisoned it on Mount Fujikasane 47 years ago, though an applicant doubted any demon there was that old. As it dies, it recalls being caught by Sakonji while eating corpses and regrets devouring its own brother after becoming a demon.

  • Possible reversal of transformation (Episode 5)

Giyu says a transformation is irreversible, yet also suggests demons may know how to reverse it, though he doubts they would help. When Tanjiro asks the demons on Mount Fujikasane how to make Nezuko human again, they only attack him, so the question stays open.

  • Black blade color (Episode 5)

Tanjiro's Nichirin Sword turns black, against the smith's expectation of red for a sun-bright user; Sakonji dismisses it as uncommon, and the reason stays unexplained.

  • Nezuko sensing siblings in victims (Episode 6)

Nezuko touches the heads of Kazumi and the rescued girl and seems to see her siblings Takeo and Hanako within them, before charging the clones.

  • Cause of transformation (Episode 7)

Giyu explains that Nezuko's exposed wounds came into contact with the demon's blood, which caused her change into a demon. Sakonji later says only the progenitor demon, Muzan Kibutsuji, who first became a demon over a thousand years ago, has blood capable of turning someone into a demon. The swamp demon's clone attributes Nezuko's great strength to having taken much of Muzan's blood, but this is only its belief.

  • Demon's silence about Muzan (Episode 7)

The clone knows something about Muzan Kibutsuji but refuses to say anything after hearing the name. He recalls being threatened by Muzan not to tell anyone, since Muzan is always watching, and his fear grows more erratic.

  • Muzan posing as a family man (Episode 7)

Muzan is seen living as a human with a wife and a little girl, while Tanjiro recognizes him as a demon. When the wife asks whether he has met Tanjiro before, Muzan denies it and says he must have mistaken him for someone else. Why he hides among humans and whether he truly does not know Tanjiro remains unexplained.

Deduction Board

Facts

  • Three clones

Three clones of one demon attack Tanjiro and Kazumi, identified by their two-horned, one-horned and three-horned forms.

  • Shared scent

All three clones have the same smell, and demons do not usually group together.

  • All three clones destroyed

Two clones were beheaded by Tanjiro's Whirlpool, and the last was killed after his arms were cut off and he was beheaded.

Evidence

  • Family cannot sense him

Muzan's wife and child cannot tell that he is a demon.

  • Silent slash

Only Tanjiro noticed Muzan's quick slash on the passerby.

  • Attacks weakened

Tanjiro's Water Breathing attacks failed to hit their weak spots and caused only minor damage, and the demons retreated into their swamp.

Inferences

  • Different from ordinary demons

The swordsman judged that she was different and chose to spare her rather than kill her.

  • Not a Blood Demon Art

Sakonji does not believe Nezuko's long sleep is an example of a Blood Demon Art

  • Applicant may be the fifth survivor

A man is told five applicants survived, which exceeds the four Tanjiro saw, so the applicant he saved may have survived

Suspicions

  • Applicant survived unseen

Tanjiro's belief that the applicant died is unconfirmed, and the applicant may have survived and been counted separately

  • Muzan watches his demons

Muzan may keep demons under surveillance and punish any who speak of him.

  • Single source

The three clones may all come from one demon, given their identical smell.

Battle Record

In Asakusa, Tanjiro tracks a demon scent to a busy street and finds Muzan posing as a human with his wife and child. Muzan secretly slashes a passerby's neck, turning him into a demon who bites his own wife's shoulder while Muzan watches. Tanjiro rushes in to stop him as the episode ends.
