Episode Summary

Lead

Jinshi asks Maomao to investigate a deceased court metalworker's inheritance, in which three sons each received a different legacy. At the old workshop, Maomao works out how to open the locked central drawer by melting metal in the keyhole so it flows into a mold and forms a key. She also deduces the father's intent: a low-melting alloy of lead, tin, and a third substance.

The youngest son is named the successor, and Lakan confirms this. Afterward, Jinshi asks Maomao about cosmetics and asks her to apply makeup to him.

  • Inheritance and the locked drawer

The father left the eldest a workshop, the second son a decorated chest of drawers, and the youngest a fishbowl, with a request to share tea. Maomao reconstructs the fishbowl's former place in the sunlight and opens the central drawer after the shadow of the chestnut tree falls on it.

  • Brothers' dispute and the father's intent

The brothers dismiss the arrangement as a prank, but the youngest insists it was not, and the older brothers say he was favored. Maomao suspects only the youngest understood the low-melting alloy.

  • Lakan's visit and Jinshi's request

Lakan says the youngest will succeed the father and that the brothers will support the business through sales and markets. Jinshi then asks Maomao to apply makeup to him.

Recent Timeline

  • Reassignment to Jinshi's residence (Episode 13)

Maomao, dismissed from the rear palace, is reassigned to Jinshi's residence instead, where Suiren explains the division between the office wing and Jinshi's private quarters. Several female officials of the outer court then challenge why she serves Jinshi directly. When her blunt remark that they were jealous worsens the dispute, she shifts to disparaging her own looks, and when they still demand an explanation she claims Jinshi employed her out of compassion, ending the confrontation.

  • Failed examination and maid assignment (Episode 13)

Maomao fails the examination for female officials. Instead she is assigned as a maid to Jinshi's rooms, which ends the plan for her to serve as an official.

  • Storehouse explosion investigation (Episode 14)

After a night explosion, Maomao traces the blast to a food storehouse by reading soot and a charred potato. A demonstration with flour shows the powder ignites when dispersed. She concludes that someone smoking secretly inside stirred the flour and set off the blast, and has Lihaku warn the warehouse keeper against smoking there.

  • Seaweed poisoning case solved (Episode 15)

Maomao traces an official's poisoning to an unseasonal southern seaweed that was not soaked in limewater. The official's younger brother confesses to buying it, having resented being overlooked as the younger son and wanting his elder brother out of the way.

  • Inheritance puzzle solved (Episode 16)

Maomao investigates the late metalworker's unequal inheritance and his final request that the brothers hold a tea party as before. By putting the water-filled glass fishbowl back where it once stood, she lets it focus sunlight on the drawer lock until the metal plugging the keyhole melts and runs into a key mold inside; once the light moves into the chestnut tree's shadow, the second son's key opens the central drawer. The solution shows the youngest son grasped the father's intent: a low-melting alloy of lead, tin, and a third substance.

World Memo

  • Flour dust ignition hazard

Flour and similar powders can ignite when dispersed in the air, so stored powder in a closed space poses an explosion risk when disturbed near a flame.

Clue Board

  • Infant death tied to Maomao's father (Episode 10)

A record of an infant's death sixteen years earlier led Maomao to her father, a former eunuch with exceptional medical skill. She has now confirmed that her adoptive father Ruomen, then a palace physician, attended Aaduo's delivery and was expelled after a series of failures.

  • Imported seaweed as poison source (Episode 15)

The seaweed was confirmed to come from the south and the official had not eaten it in winter before. Maomao suspects it needed limewater soaking to be safe. The result of the overnight soaking test is not stated.

  • Buyer of the imported seaweed (Episode 15)

The question of who requested the imported seaweed is resolved: the official's younger brother confessed to buying it once the supplier was located. His stated motive was resentment at being neglected as the younger son and wanting his elder brother out of the way.

  • Tavern stranger's poison knowledge (Episode 15)

According to Gaoshun, the younger brother claimed a stranger seated beside him in a tavern told him about the seaweed's poison by chance. Maomao regards this explanation with skepticism, and the stranger's identity and motive remain unknown.

  • Unequal inheritance value (Episode 16)

The father left unequal inheritances. The youngest son's fishbowl turned out to be expensive glass, which casts doubt on the assumption that his share was worth less than his brothers'.

  • Missing key for upper drawers (Episode 16)

The key needed for the chest's upper drawers was missing, and the second son's only key did not fit the central drawer.

  • Chest drawer unlocking method (Episode 16)

The central drawer had stopped opening after the father modified it. Maomao melted the metal blocking the keyhole with heat, letting it flow into a mold to form a key. The drawer opened after sunlight moved into the chestnut tree's shadow.

  • Contents of the drawers (Episode 16)

The opened central drawer held a key mold in which the melted metal had set into a key, and that key opened the upper drawers. Inside were three lumps: lead, tin, and a bluish crystal like the one displayed at the entrance. The father had warned that forcing the central lock would break what was inside.

  • Father's recurring symptoms (Episode 16)

The late craftsman suffered recurring anemia, abdominal pain, nausea, and depression. Maomao asked about his health and about the use of solder, but the link between these symptoms and his work is not stated.

  • Metalworker's lost technique (Episode 16)

A court metalworker died without naming a successor or passing his secret technique to his three children, who were also his apprentices. Lakan suspects the craftsman's suggestive final instructions may hold a clue and asks Jinshi whether his clever new maid could investigate.

Maomao suspects only the youngest son understood the father's intent: lead, tin, and a third substance could form an alloy melting at a particularly low temperature. This remains unconfirmed.

  • Drawer size proportions (Episode 16)

The drawers differ in size, and Maomao wondered whether this indicated proportions. She did not explain further.

  • Reason for Jinshi's makeup request (Episode 16)

Jinshi asked whether Maomao knew about cosmetics and then requested that she apply makeup to him. His reason is not given.

Deduction Board

Facts

  • No successor named

The metalworker who supplied the court died without naming a successor or passing his secret technique to his three children, who were also his apprentices.

  • Central drawer jammed

The second son's central drawer stopped opening while the father was modifying it, and the father warned against forcing the lock because the contents would also be damaged.

  • Drawer opened by sunlight

Maomao recreated the fishbowl's former place so that concentrated sunlight fell on the lock, and after the light passed into the tree's shadow the second son's key opened the drawer.

Evidence

  • Craftsman's final instructions

His final instructions were suggestive and may contain a clue, according to Lakan.

  • Father's ailments

The father had suffered recurring anemia, abdominal pain, nausea and depression, as Maomao learned while asking about his health and his use of solder.

  • Key mold

Maomao identified a key mold and reasoned that heat had melted the metal blocking the keyhole, which flowed into the mold below and formed another key.

Inferences

  • Secret smoking caused explosion

Maomao proposed that someone smoked secretly inside the storehouse, stirring flour that ignited when the pipe was lit.

  • Possible arson

Maomao suspected arson could explain Lihaku's involvement, since the incident occurred within the palace grounds.

  • Heat-melt unlocking method

Maomao reasoned that the concentrated light heated a low-melting metal plug in the keyhole so that it could be removed.

Suspicions

  • Clue in final instructions

Lakan believes the suggestive final instructions may point to where the technique went.

  • Low-melting alloy design

Maomao suspected that only the youngest son understood the father's intention, namely that lead, tin and a third substance could form an alloy melting at a particularly low temperature.

  • Drawer proportions

Maomao considered whether the differing drawer sizes indicated proportions, but did not explain this further.
