Episode Summary
A Jaunt Around Town
Jinshi asks Maomao to disguise him as a commoner; she uses clothing, scent control, powders, a swelling drink and cotton to alter his looks, then accompanies him on an outing as a lady with him as her attendant.
Along the way they discuss her adoptive father, a eunuch trained in Western medicine, and Maomao explains how a courtesan's value is built on being untouched and can collapse with the loss of virginity or pregnancy.
- Disguising Jinshi as a commoner
Maomao makes Jinshi look like a commoner by stripping away his refined look with oil, salt, towels, dark powders, uneven coloring, moles and a swelling drink, and cotton in his cheeks, though his looks still show through.
- Setting out in disguise
Suiren proposes disguising Maomao too, and she and Jinshi travel as a lady and her attendant toward the pleasure district for his appointment.
- Talk about her adoptive father
Maomao describes her adoptive father as her teacher with both traditional and Western medical training, and reveals he is a eunuch.

Recent Timeline
- Storehouse explosion investigation (Episode 14)
After a night explosion, Maomao traced the blast to a food storehouse by reading soot and a charred potato, then demonstrated with flour that the powder ignited when dispersed. She concluded someone smoking secretly inside stirred the flour and set off the blast, and she had Lihaku warn the warehouse keeper against smoking there.
- Seaweed poisoning case solved (Episode 15)
Maomao traced the official's poisoning to an unseasonal southern seaweed that had not been soaked in limewater, and the official's younger brother confessed to buying it. He had resented being overlooked as the younger son and wanted his elder brother out of the way.
- Inheritance puzzle solved (Episode 16)
Maomao investigated the late metalworker's unequal inheritance and his final request that the brothers hold a tea party as before. By putting the water-filled glass fishbowl back where it once stood, she let it focus sunlight on the drawer lock until the metal plugging the keyhole melted and ran into a key mold inside; once the light moved into the chestnut tree's shadow, the second son's key opened the central drawer. The solution showed that the youngest son had grasped the father's intent: a low-melting alloy of lead, tin, and a third substance.
- Jinshi's disguise for the outing (Episode 17)
Maomao disguised Jinshi as a commoner by altering his build, skin tone, features, and voice, and the disguise was completed with cotton in his cheeks. Suiren then proposed disguising Maomao too, and she went out dressed as a young lady with Jinshi as her attendant under an assumed name.

- The expensive Verdigris House
The Verdigris House is an expensive brothel whose courtesans, such as Pairin, Joka, and Meimei, are highly sought after and beyond the reach of many senior officials.
- Courtesan training and valuation
The Verdigris House raises girls from childhood to become courtesans. Promising beauties attract customers through conversation and accomplishments rather than being sold for sex right away. A courtesan's price rests on her untouched status: losing it can halve her value, and pregnancy can reduce it to almost nothing.
- Courtesan contract buyout
Courtesans in the pleasure district serve under contracts with a promised release date, and a customer may buy a woman out of her contract before that date.
As prices rise and access narrows, a celebrated courtesan's customers may pay enormous sums merely to share tea. Sometimes they buy out her contract without ever touching her.
Clue Board
- Jinshi may have tested Maomao with drugged food (Episode 2)
Maomao suspected that Jinshi had knowingly tried to make her eat the drugged bun, a question left unresolved in this episode.
- Riishu's outfit as deliberate embarrassment (Episode 7)
Maomao conjectures that Riishu's attendants deliberately let her wear a bright pink outfit too similar to Gyokuyo's to embarrass her. A flashback of criticism over the clothing, which Maomao reads as Aaduo's attendants rebuking Riishu's attendants, supports the suspicion; it remains unconfirmed.
- Attendant's possible foreknowledge (Episode 8)
Maomao suspects the young attendant sought an absent apothecary to delay help and may have known the courtesan would survive, though she questions whether she is overthinking it.
- Courtesan as the attempted killer (Episode 8)
Maomao reasons that the courtesan used tobacco-infused liquor, with two liquors of different densities layered so she drank only the safe lower layer through a straw, then drank a small amount of the poisoned upper layer herself, calculating that the man would die while she survived; Maomao's treatment saved them both. This remains her hypothesis, not a confirmed answer.
- Reason for Riishu's visit (Episode 10)
Riishu came to the residence with only her food taster, and Maomao wonders why she came; the purpose is not yet explained.
- Abduction and sale of a person (Episode 11)
Jinshi said he had heard someone was abducted and sold, in the same scene where Gaoshun presented a list of Fengming's relatives and associates.
- Tavern stranger's poison knowledge (Episode 15)
According to Gaoshun, the younger brother claimed a stranger seated beside him in a tavern told him about the seaweed's poison by chance. Maomao regards this explanation with skepticism, and the stranger's identity and motive remain unknown.
- Metalworker's lost technique (Episode 16)
A court metalworker died without naming a successor or passing his secret technique to his three children, who were also his apprentices. Lakan suspects the craftsman's suggestive final instructions may hold a clue and asks Jinshi whether his clever new maid could investigate.
Maomao suspects only the youngest son understood the father's intent: lead, tin, and a third substance could form an alloy melting at a particularly low temperature. This remains unconfirmed.
- Drawer size proportions (Episode 16)
The drawers differ in size, and Maomao wondered whether this indicated proportions. She did not explain further.
- Jinshi's possible military background (Episode 17)
Jinshi's calluses and his remark about camping food suggest martial or campaign experience, which Maomao finds odd for a eunuch; the matter is left unasked and unexplained.
- Reason for Jinshi's makeup request (Episode 17)
Jinshi asked whether Maomao knew about cosmetics and then requested that she apply makeup to him. His reason is not given.
Jinshi says the disguise is for meeting an acquaintance at an eating house near the pleasure district, but the deeper purpose of the visit remains unstated.
- Jinshi's interest in courtesan value (Episode 17)
Jinshi asks how a courtesan's value could be lowered and asks about the Verdigris House's regular customers; his motive is not given, and Maomao refuses to share customer information.
Deduction Board
Facts
- No successor named
The metalworker who supplied the court died without naming a successor or passing his secret technique to his three children, who were also his apprentices.
- Central drawer jammed
The second son's central drawer stopped opening while the father was modifying it, and the father warned against forcing the lock because the contents would also be damaged.
- Drawer opened by sunlight
Maomao recreated the fishbowl's former place so that concentrated sunlight fell on the lock, and after the light passed into the tree's shadow the second son's key opened the drawer.
Evidence
- Craftsman's final instructions
His final instructions were suggestive and may contain a clue, according to Lakan.
- Father's ailments
The father had suffered recurring anemia, abdominal pain, nausea and depression, as Maomao learned while asking about his health and his use of solder.
- Key mold
Maomao identified a key mold and reasoned that heat had melted the metal blocking the keyhole, which flowed into the mold below and formed another key.
Inferences
- Secret smoking caused explosion
Maomao proposed that someone smoked secretly inside the storehouse, stirring flour that ignited when the pipe was lit.
- Possible arson
Maomao suspected arson could explain Lihaku's involvement, since the incident occurred within the palace grounds.
- Heat-melt unlocking method
Maomao reasoned that the concentrated light heated a low-melting metal plug in the keyhole so that it could be removed.
Suspicions
- Clue in final instructions
Lakan believes the suggestive final instructions may point to where the technique went.
- Low-melting alloy design
Maomao suspected that only the youngest son understood the father's intention, namely that lead, tin and a third substance could form an alloy melting at a particularly low temperature.
- Drawer proportions
Maomao considered whether the differing drawer sizes indicated proportions, but did not explain this further.
