Recent Timeline
- Seaweed poisoning case solved (Episode 15)
Maomao traced the official's poisoning to an unseasonal southern seaweed that had not been soaked in limewater, and the official's younger brother confessed to buying it. He had resented being overlooked as the younger son and wanted his elder brother out of the way.
- Inheritance puzzle solved (Episode 16)
Maomao investigated the late metalworker's unequal inheritance and his final request that the brothers hold a tea party as before. By putting the water-filled glass fishbowl back where it once stood, she let it focus sunlight on the drawer lock until the metal plugging the keyhole melted and ran into a key mold inside; once the light moved into the chestnut tree's shadow, the second son's key opened the central drawer. The solution showed that the youngest son had grasped the father's intent: a low-melting alloy of lead, tin, and a third substance.
- Jinshi's disguise for the outing (Episode 17)
Maomao disguised Jinshi as a commoner by altering his build, skin tone, features, and voice, and the disguise was completed with cotton in his cheeks. Suiren then proposed disguising Maomao too, and she went out dressed as a young lady with Jinshi as her attendant under an assumed name.
- Lakan's request refused by Jinshi (Episode 18)
Lakan, who had sought Maomao for over ten years, asked Jinshi to let him see her and offered any payment. Jinshi realized Lakan knew his true identity and recognized him as Maomao's biological father. Jinshi promised to refuse the request, and Maomao thanked him, having concluded she had been discovered.
- Maomao finds unofficial medicinal garden (Episode 18)
Maomao followed the scent of herbs to an unofficial medicinal garden and met Suirei there. Suirei tolerated her presence without a reprimand but warned that frequent visits would be noticed, since the medical officers knew of the garden.

Lakan (Maomao's biological father)

He told Jinshi he had spent over ten years persuading the madam only to have Maomao snatched away, said he would pay any price, and asked Jinshi to tell his daughter he would come to see her, whereupon Jinshi realized he is Maomao's biological father.

World Memo
- Courtesan training and valuation
The Verdigris House raises girls from childhood to become courtesans. Promising beauties attract customers through conversation and accomplishments rather than being sold for sex right away. A courtesan's price rests on her untouched status: losing it can halve her value, and pregnancy can reduce it to almost nothing.
- Courtesan contract buyout
Courtesans in the pleasure district serve under contracts with a promised release date, and a customer may buy a woman out of her contract before that date.
As prices rise and access narrows, a celebrated courtesan's customers may pay enormous sums merely to share tea. Sometimes they buy out her contract without ever touching her.
- Unofficial medicinal garden
A medicinal garden kept outside official arrangements. The medical officers know it exists, and frequent visits to it are discouraged.
Clue Board
- Illness of imperial children (Episode 1)
Rumors blamed a curse for the deaths of three imperial children, and doctors were treating Rifa's and Gyokuyo's sick infants; Maomao judged it was no curse but poisoning from the face powder used around them.
- Jinshi may have tested Maomao with drugged food (Episode 2)
Maomao suspected that Jinshi had knowingly tried to make her eat the drugged bun, a question left unresolved in this episode.
- Maomao's reading of Fuyo's sleepwalking (Episode 3)
At first Maomao wondered whether distress over being given away had caused Fuyo's sleepwalking. Later she told Gyokuyo her conclusion: like a courtesan she once knew, Fuyo faked it so the emperor would not be tempted to keep her before she was handed to the officer. Maomao stressed it was only conjecture, and Fuyo never confirmed it.
- Riishu's outfit as deliberate embarrassment (Episode 7)
Maomao conjectures that Riishu's attendants deliberately let her wear a bright pink outfit too similar to Gyokuyo's to embarrass her. A flashback of criticism over the clothing, which Maomao reads as Aaduo's attendants rebuking Riishu's attendants, supports the suspicion; it remains unconfirmed.
- Attendant's possible foreknowledge (Episode 8)
Maomao suspects the young attendant sought an absent apothecary to delay help and may have known the courtesan would survive, though she questions whether she is overthinking it.
- Infant death tied to Maomao's father (Episode 10)
A record of an infant's death sixteen years earlier led Maomao to her father, a former eunuch with exceptional medical skill. She has now confirmed that her adoptive father Ruomen, then a palace physician, attended Aaduo's delivery and was expelled after a series of failures.
- Drowned servant's uncertain death (Episode 11)
A kitchen servant was found drowned in the outer moat and the guards believed she jumped from the wall. Maomao could not determine suicide, doubted she could climb the high wall alone, and believed she entered the water alive. The case was later closed as suicide after a farewell note was found, though she had been present at the garden party poisoning incident.
Maomao concluded the drowned maid killed herself and suspected Fengming helped arrange it to divert suspicion from Aaduo.
- Tavern stranger's poison knowledge (Episode 15)
According to Gaoshun, the younger brother claimed a stranger seated beside him in a tavern told him about the seaweed's poison by chance. Maomao regards this explanation with skepticism, and the stranger's identity and motive remain unknown.
- Jinshi's possible military background (Episode 17)
Jinshi's calluses and his remark about camping food suggest martial or campaign experience, which Maomao finds odd for a eunuch; the matter is left unasked and unexplained.
- Reason for Jinshi's makeup request (Episode 17)
Jinshi asked whether Maomao knew about cosmetics and then requested that she apply makeup to him. His reason is not given.
Jinshi says the disguise is for meeting an acquaintance at an eating house near the pleasure district, but the deeper purpose of the visit remains unstated.
- Jinshi's unexplained eunuch status (Episode 18)
Maomao wonders why a man of high birth became a eunuch, prompted by his twice-monthly duties, bathing and incense preparations, and meatless meals resembling ritual purification.
- Adoptive father among eunuchs (Episode 18)
Jinshi tells Gaoshun that Maomao's adoptive father was a eunuch and medical officer, and Gaoshun questions whether such a skilled physician served among the eunuchs.
Deduction Board
Facts
- Drawer opened by sunlight
Maomao recreated the fishbowl's former place so that concentrated sunlight fell on the lock, and after the light passed into the tree's shadow the second son's key opened the drawer.
- Jinshi is a eunuch
Maomao's observations treat Jinshi as a eunuch who may be of high birth.
- Collects duty-station medicine
Suirei gathers medicines for a duty station, and she keeps a medicinal garden she says she may plant as she likes.
Evidence
- Medicine in question
Maomao examines Jinshi's medicine and wonders whether it is merely powdered tuber.
- Herbal scent
The herbal scent Maomao noticed earlier matches Suirei's medicine gathering.
- Unofficial garden
Suirei admits the garden is unofficial and that the medical officers know about it.
Inferences
- Heat-melt unlocking method
Maomao reasoned that the concentrated light heated a low-melting metal plug in the keyhole so that it could be removed.
- Purification resemblance
Maomao links Jinshi's routine to ritual purification, which suggests a formal background.
- Military link
Maomao infers that Suirei's military connection explains the herbal scent.
Suspicions
- High-born origin
Maomao wonders why a man of high birth would have become a eunuch, so Jinshi's origin is still open.
- Higher origin
The physician's remark that Suirei should not have had to work as a court lady hints at a higher status, which the remark leaves unexplained.
- Revival claim
Suirei mentioned a medicine that could revive the dead, then told the eager Maomao it was a joke, so whether such a medicine exists is unconfirmed.
